This Year's Banquet of Champions Was a Great Success!

The SPD Foundation’s Olympic-themed Banquet of Champions was very successful in raising donations benefiting the SPD Foundation in our mission to provide hope and help for special needs children. We couldn't have done it without the generous support of sponsors, silent auction donors and people attending this festive event held at the Inverness Hotel. We raised 97% of our $75,000 goal!

It was a fun evening attended by close to 200 people who enjoyed complimentary cocktails donated by Castle Pines North Wine and Spirits and Tivoli Beer, entertainment, live music by Coles Whalen, a silent auction, trivia contests, prizes, photo booth, sumptuous dinner and awards ceremony.

The Banquet of Champions awards were given to well-deserving and outstanding philanthropists and supporters of the SPD Foundation. The Nominees for awards were chosen for carrying the torch of passion and inspiration for sensory processing disorder research and education.

The champion award winners were:

  • Founder’s Award – Kathryn E. Miller
  • Champion of Passion– Dr. Edward Goldson
  • Champion of Inspiration – Pat Pietro
  • Champion of Partnership – Landscape Structures
  • Champion of Partnership – Kahn Construction

… And a special award was given to Jack, our first Junior Champion of Hope. Jack is a child with SPD. When Jack first arrived at the STAR Center he had motor planning difficulties, and a hard time playing with his peers. In spite of his challenges, he was so joyful that he was an inspiration to everyone who met him. Children like Jack motivate the STAR Foundation to press on with cutting-edge research into causes and effective treatments for SPD. Jack has been an inspiration in how he is working to overcome and cope with SPD on a daily level.

Kathryn E. Miller received a surprise Founder’s Award for serving as an inspirational leader and tireless board member for the SPD Foundation. Katy is an extraordinary person who shows her heart through her giving of time and resources to countless causes including elders’ rights, women’s rights and disenfranchised populations. She is actively involved in supporting Special Olympics by coordinating downhill skiing events on weekends.

Dr. Edward Goldson, who is affiliated with the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital Colorado, was awarded the Champion of Passion due to his unyielding efforts to educate others about SPD, his years of support to the foundation, and his compassion and devotion to advocating for children.

Pat Peitro, owner of the family Thrift Center in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, was awarded the Champion of Inspiration for his commitment to helping the SPD Foundation and being such an ardent supporter. Mr. Pietro loyally served his country in Vietnam and firmly believes in giving back to the community.

Kahn Construction was awarded the Champion of Partnership for donating their time and expertise to ensure the overall success of installing “The World’s Best Sensory Playground” at the SPD Foundation and STAR Center. Without their efforts, the playground installation would never have been possible. Kahn Construction is a general contractor located in Centennial, Colorado.

Capping off the night was the Champion of Partnership award given to Landscape Structures for generously donating playground equipment for the “The World’s Best Sensory Playground” at the STAR Center and SPD Foundation. The playground equipment is used as a therapy tool for children, and is a key component for the SPD Foundation’s Equipment Effectiveness. Landscape Structures is located in Delano, Minnesota and manufactures innovative playground products.
